Get on Island Thyme on Salt Cay

Salt Cay is truly a TCI classic. We call it the ‘island the time forgot’ and that’s pretty much how it is over there. No need for a watch on Salt Cay!

It’s our least populated island, but there are few places to stay and eat – surf on over to their local web site to get the scoop on what’s available for you to see, do, eat, and stay.

On Salt Cay you’ll experience Caribbean from yesteryear, and get a glimpse into one of the most important historical industries in TCI – salt making. The salt beds are everywhere on the island and dominate the landscape. At one point we were one of the world’s leading exporters of the white stuff, back before refrigeration became widely available. Nowadays, it’s a great place to unwind, even for a quick weekend getaway from the ‘hustle and bustle’ of Provo. And, it’s an ideal place to launch your whale watching adventure in Turks & Caicos.

The folks are friendly over there, and we highly recommend a stop by to say hello to Porter and Haidee Williams, long time proprietors of Island Thyme Bistro and the Green Flash Café. The have regular parties and events, including the annual Pirate Party, scheduled for Saturday, March 29. (The fare is “pot luck” so bring your favorite dish and you must come in pirate garb and be ready to party Salt Cay style.). Bookmark their web site to stay up with the happenings on Salt Cay.

While on Salt Cay, get yourself an oil painting of the Green Flash Café (pictured). It was commissioned by Porter and Haidee and created by Shari Erickson, an American contemporary painter. Numbered prints of this work of art are available $65.00 plus $15.00 shipping and handling. The original is also available for $5,500, plus $100 shipping/handling/insurance.

It’s easy enough to get to Salt Cay on one of our local airlines – just a quick hop from Grand Turk, and you can even visit Salt Cay if you’re here on a cruise ship stop.
