New Year’s Jump Up!

junkanoo.jpgA big New Year’s tradition in TCI is the early morning ‘jump up’ in downtown Providenciales. The main attraction is the Junk A Noo band that parades through town. It starts at around sunrise on New Year’s Day, so one way or the other, Junk A Noo is sure to wake you up! There was also a parade of floats, food and drink and generally a good time.

We do the typical countdown to midnight, too, on New Year’s Eve (not many people know that Dick Clark, famous for his New York City New Year’s Eve Party actually spends much of the rest of the year in Turks & Caicos!) and most of the resorts host elaborate parties that conclude with plenty of horn blowing and fireworks.

TCI has another native version of Junk a Noo (which has its roots in Africa but is considered more Bahamian or ‘down island’ Caribbean from places like Trinidad) – we call it Massin’. It involves making creative masks out of just about anything and David Bowen, who heads up our TCI Culture Department here, has done a great job of reviving it as cultural

fixture in TCI. The Massin’ was on display this New Year’s along side the Junk A Noo bands.
