As one would suspect of an island country, sailing and boat building are an integral part of the TCI history, culture and economy. Although much has changed since the early days when hand built sailboats were our country’s lifeline, the Turks & Caicos Maritime Heritage Federation does excellent work in preserving our seafaring legacy through a variety of projects, events and generally informative programs it runs.
H.E. Ross is the program manager for the Federation and does great job of organizing educational and sailing programs for kids, promoting the art and skill of boat building across all generations of Turks Islanders, and helping celebrate glorious age in TCI’s history. The graceful sloops that typify the Turks Islands sailing legacy can still be seen on our waters thanks in large part to the efforts of the TCMHF. They conduct the occasional regatta and races, as well as hands-on demonstrations and training for all to enjoy their speed and power.
For a great overview article on the Federation and on the history of sloop building and sailing in the TCI, check out this piece in the The Times of the Islands, one of our favorite publications about TCI.
We’ll keep you up to date on what the Federation is up to, and we encourage you to check out their, and sign up for Ross’s very informative email newsletter, The Federation Log.
