Scuba Secrets: Pillory Beach in Grand Turk (courtesy of Bohio Dive Resort)

It is no secret that some of best wall diving to be experienced anywhere on the planet can be found on Grand Turk’s west side, where the Columbus Passage plunges to over a mile deep. What many people don’t know is that there is also world-class snorkeling to be found in this region too.

For the best of Grand Turk snorkeling and shore-diving head to Pillory Beach, a naturally sheltered bay towards the north of the island, where you will frequently spot Eagle Rays, Sting Rays, juvenile Spotted Drums and schools of fish just meters from the shore. At sunset let the resident pelican entertain you as he swoops over the water on the look out for an early dinner. It’s not uncommon to be snorkeling in a school of fish so dense you cannot see the other side when suddenly Mr. Pelican dives into the middle of the action leaving carnage in his wake! For more underwater adventure, just pull on a pair of fins and you can be at the edge of Grand Turk Wall in just over 10 minutes, where the abundant fish life and array of coral make this one of the best dive sites in the world.

The Bohio Dive Resort is situated on Pillory Beach, an ideal spot to base yourself for a week’s diving, snorkeling or just pure relaxation.
