The Turks and Caicos hosted its first every World Cup qualifying soccer match this month at the beautiful new National Stadium in Providenciales. Our boys took on St. Lucia in a home-and-home series that will see the winner advance to play Guatemala, with an eventual chance to advance the World Cup 2010 in South Africa.
But first things first: our first ever FIFA-sanctioned match in TCI: Playing before an audience that included famed actress Jane Fonda, the TCI team downed St Lucia 2-1. The victory shot TCI up the worldwide FIFA rankings, from near the bottom to a respectable 158th. Not bad for a team that really just started competing on an international level in the past couple of years and relies on mostly part-time players (with the notable exception of native Gavin Glinton, who played last year with David Beckham on the LA Express, and who scored the game winner for TCI vs. St Lucia.)
They’ll play a rematch in St Lucia in on March 26 with both team aspiring to take the next step toward South Africa. Best of luck to the Turks Islanders!
