During his visit, last week to the Islands, Regional Area representative, Neville “Teddy” McCook openly stated his pleasure at the tremendous progress made by these Islands in preparation for Carifta. Mr. McCook said that following his last visit some three months ago; he was truly amazed and pleased at the efforts being made by the Government and the Local Organizing Committee.
He went on to say that these islands have a lot to be proud of as the TCI now ranks among the top ten (10) countries to host the Caribbean’s most prestigious track and field games. To date, Mr. McCook said that of the twenty-five-member country Federations, only eight (8) have hosted these Games so far.
Honourable Dr. Lillian Boyce, Minister with portfolio responsibility for Sports, said that Carifta 2007 is not a myth but a ‘real’ reality. Minister Boyce went on to say, “My Ministry, Ministerial Colleagues and the LOC is working assiduously to ensure that all aspects and requirements of the Games are facilitated and in place.” “Carifta,” she said, “is not about me, or the Government or any individual, but rather about ALL of us in the TCI. Hosting Carifta is an event that should create and stimulate our national pride.” In an appeal to the public, the Sports Minister asked residents to come together, create history, strengthen bonds and infuse this year’s games with camaraderie and support thus catapulting us to success and a level of achievement second to none.
Presently, there are six forty-foot containers at the track site containing the top surface of the track as well as many other pertinent materials for completion.
Administratively, National Federations have been issued the Technical Manual, which acts as the mandate of the games.
The Island’s Secretariat housed at the Gustarvus Lightbourne Sports Complex is open and manned by local athlete, Willah Gray. Telephone number: 649-941-8326; Facsimile: 649-941-8327.
