Turks and Caicos Students Receive Honorable Mentions in Caribbean Cruise Essay Competition
17 January 2008
The Turks and Caicos Tourist Board is proud to announce the accomplishments of two local students who earned honorable mentions in the 2007 Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) essay competition.
On Wednesday, January 16 Tourist Board officials presented British West Indies Collegiate students; Jessica Foley (Junior Division) and Katie Greenwood (Senior Division) with checks for $200.00 each, to reward their efforts in making it to the final round of the competition.

During the short presentation, Blyth Clare, Tourist Board Training Manager and coordinator for this event, thanked the principals and their schools for their support, saying “I am delighted that two students from the Turks and Caicos made it to the final round.” Adding, “I would like to encourage students throughout the islands to take advantage of the many opportunities that are presented and I encourage students to participate in our international and our national competitions.”

Turks and Caicos students were among 100s of students from destinations throughout the Caribbean and Latin America invited to participate in the FCCA Foundations 2007 Children’s Essay Contest on the topic, “If I was a Cruise Passenger, what would I like to see or do in my country?

The top three winners from both junior and senior division categories received academic scholarships of $3,000, $1,500 and $1,000 respectively, with a separate monetary award provided to their schools.  The first place winners from both categories were invited to read their essay and receive their scholarships at FCCA’s 14th Annual Caribbean Cruise Conference & Trade Show – October 8-12, 2007 in Cozumel, Mexico.

Ralph Higgs, Director of Tourism Marketing said “On behalf of the Turks and Caicos Tourist Board, we congratulate these students for their fine achievement and trust that they will continue to develop their talents which have earned them honorable mention in this competition.”

The Tourist Board is encouraging students to develop their creativity. Beginning in February, the Tourist Board will host an essay and poster competition to commemorate the Year of the Coral Reef, and following that event a similar competition will be held for 10th Annual Sustainable Tourism Conference, set to take place in Turks and Caicos April 28th to May 1st.
