GRAND TURK, Turks and Caicos Islands; Monday, February 23, 2009 — The Turks and Caicos Tourist Board is proud to announce the hosting of The Caribbean Islands Marathon Cruise, staged in Grand Turk, on Monday, February 16th, 2009.

The two mile marathon began at 8:30 am from the entrance of the Grand Turk Cruise Center and took the participants through the scenic and historic areas of Grand Turk. With nothing but blue skies, all 26 athletes, whom traveled aboard the Eurodam, Holland America - got off to a brisk start, as they raced through the picturesque town, with hopes of being the first to cross the finish line.  However, in the in end it was Victoria Bentley who won the race and took the day's bragging rights.

"The event was a success," said Lindsey Musgrove, Director of Tourism, "Not only did the athletes have a chance to see the quaint island, but created a one of a kind experience."  The Director went on to thank the community of Grand Turk for their support and special thanks to the Grand Turk Cruise Center, The Turks and Caicos Islands Sports Commission, The Grand Turk Medical Department and Hospital Emergency Medical Services as well as the Royal Turks and Caicos Police Force.

The Caribbean Islands Marathon is hosted by John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield and is the worlds only staged maritime marathon designed for runners and walkers alike. Each day, athletes run or walk a timed distance, on new terrain and enjoy new racing experiences in some of the Caribbean's prettiest destinations.

Grand Turk was the first of four stops on the marathon tour.  From Grand Turk, the participants go on to run 10 miles in San Juan, Puerto Rico; 5 miles in St. Thomas, U.S Virgin Islands and 3 miles in Half Moon Cay, Bahamas, before returning to Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Saturday, February 21.
